Why Inspections Matter
Fire extinguishers are your first line of defence in a fire - but only if they’re working. A non-functioning extinguisher could be a legal risk or worse, a life-threatening failure. Your site team should be conducting monthly visual checks and logging this in the logbook.
Here’s your no-fuss checklist for your Fire Extinguisher Inspection to make sure yours are ready when needed.
1. Are Extinguishers Readily Accessible?
• No furniture blocking them?
• Mounted securely at the right height?
• Proper signage visible? Are they Photoluminescent?
Access delays can cost lives - always check this first.
2. Is the Pressure Gauge in the Green?
• Look at the dial. If it’s in the red (either low or high), that extinguisher may not operate correctly and needs attention immediately.
• Pay attention to its weight - if it feels lighter than usual, this is a good indication that it has been discharged or leaking.
3. Are the Tamper Seals Intact?
Each extinguisher should have a coloured tamper tag and pin in place. If this is missing, someone may have used or tampered with it.
4. Any Signs of Damage or Rust?
A fire extinguisher is designed to last for up to 5 or 10 years. The following signs will indicate whether it’s time for replacement:
Look for:
• Corrosion
• Cracks or dents
• Wobbly handle
• Leaks or nozzle blockages
• Lost inspection tag
Physical damage can stop the extinguisher from working under pressure.
5. Is the Label and Type Still Clear?
Make sure the label is readable, and the extinguisher type is appropriate for the area (e.g., CO2 for electrics, Foam for combustibles).
6. Is It Within Its Service Window?
By law, extinguishers must be:
• Visually inspected monthly
• Serviced annually
• Refilled/replaced every 5 or 10 years dependant on type.
Check your inspection tags and service dates.
7. Are Staff Trained to Use Them?
An extinguisher is only useful if someone knows how to use it. Consider regular fire safety training for your team.
